Programs & Services

We offer a center based program for children, from two to five years of age, who qualify for either Early Intervention services under the New York State Department of Health or Pre-School Special Education services under the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. These programs are fully funded by the State and City, therefore On Our Way Learning does not charge a fee for any child who qualifies. Transportation to and from their home is also provided free of charge.

Early Intervention*: Services are provided to children from birth to three years old who either have or appear to have developmental disabilities or delays. For those children who qualify, services are fully funded by New York State Department of Health and are offered at no cost to parents. On Our Way Learning provides the following services under this program:

• Speech therapy
• Occupational therapy
• Physical Therapy
• Special Education
• Psychological Services
• Parent Workshops
• Service Coordination
• Free Transportation

School Based Programs: Pre-School Special Education services are provided to children with developmental disabilities or delays from their third birthday until their entry into school. For those children who qualify, this program is fully funded by New York City. Each classroom has a special education teacher, a teacher’s assistant and a team of therapists to provide all of the
interventions necessary to meet the goals in each child’s Individual Service Plan. On Our Way Learning Center offers a variety of classes and therapies on site.

• Half day classes for children ages 2-5.
• Full day classes for children ages 2-5 with more severe disabilities and delays.
• Speech, occupational and physical therapies.
• All teachers and all therapists are New York State certified.
• Transportation provided at no cost.
• Service coordination, psychological services and parent workshops.

Integrated Classes: In an effort to promote community inclusion, On Our Way Learning offers several classes where children with developmental disabilities are integrated with regular mainstream children. We offer:

• Full day integrated class for 3 year olds where mainstream children successfully join children with developmental disabilities or delays in the same classroom.
• Full day integrated classes for 4 year olds under Universal Pre-K.
• All integrated classes have a special education teacher, a general education teacher and two assistants.

Universal Pre-K: One of our most successful school based integrated programs is our Universal Pre-K class. There is no cost for any child to attend this program. Funded by the NYC Department of Education, the Universal Pre-K program provides regular mainstream children with the opportunity to expand their emerging educational, social, and emotional horizons.

The mainstream children in the Universal Pre-K program are integrated in the same classroom as children who have developmental disabilities. All students gain from the low student teacher ratio and the opportunity to learn from one another.

Evaluations: On Our Way Learning is a New York State approved evaluation site for all children from birth through age 5. Our multi-disciplinary team is comprised of certified Special Educators, Speech Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists who evaluate a child’s delays to determine the type and extent of educational and clinical interventions necessary to stimulate the child’s development and reach specific milestones. Based on this evaluation, the child may qualify for services and have an Individualized Service Plan drafted defining certain goals and desired outcomes.

Service Coordination: Our Service Coordinators help the families navigate all aspects of the Early Intervention and Pre-School Education system by:

• coordinating and monitoring all services available to the children
• providing information to the family about available resources, options and providers
• assisting in the development of Individualized Service Plans
• facilitating transition of children aging out of the Early Intervention system

Family Support: On Our Way offers support to families and caregivers of children with developmental delays or disabilities. We help give parents an understanding of their child’s disability and let them know that they can do something about it. We conduct workshops every month on topics that will help parents deal with their children’s issues effectively. We also sponsor conferences and groups which the parents are invited to join.
